The Truth About Direct Email & Email Lists Part I - What`s Unsafe

Unsafe email marketing is a method many people foolishly
try, thinking it will yield big money fast. When you send an
UNSOLICITED EMAIL to someone -- when you invite yourself
into someone`s emailbox without invitation or permission --
that`s called SPAM.

If the people receiving your messages have no interest in
your offer, or they simply don`t know you and don`t want to
know you, chances are they`re tossing your message into the
trash bin and you`re tossing your marketing dollars down the
toilet. Sending spam -- and that`s exactly how your
unsolicited message will be reviewed, regardless of the
value of your offer -- gives your business a black eye and
damages your reputation...and the "kicker" is: it doesn`t`
improve business!

Conducting a marketing campaign using BULK EMAIL will
manifest the same results as spam.

"bulk marketers" have turned consumers into enemies and
their email boxes into barricaded fortresses with fortified
perimeters. Utter the wrong word -- one of the "dreaded"
TRIGGER WORDS that email filters know and hate -- and

crafted offer -- with all those brilliant headlines and

the irresistible post-script...none of it will ever be read!

The U.s. Congress has even gotten in on the act (pardon the
pun) of trying to cut down on the garbage truckloads of

2003, the CAN SPAM Act became official, with laws that
supercede state spam laws and fairly clearly spell out what
is and is not acceptable and required when it comes to

looking for specific KEYWORDS, key phrases, and key
characters (like the dollar symbol, for example). Filters
check the To and From addresses for these keywords. Then
they go hunting for those words in the subject line and the
body of the message, or in a combination of the two to see
what`s being used and over-used.

"Over-used" is an important part of the trigger word
equation. A single use of the word "fr ee" (as an example),
probably won`t "raise an eyebrow" on a common filter. But
use the word a dozen times and it`s "Goodbye Charlie."

8 Steps to Irresistible Email Copy Every Time

=> Step #1 - WHO DO YOU THINK YOU`RE TALKING TO?

Before you sit down to write your email sales letter, you`ve
got to determine exactly who your audience is. This is a
master key to getting results from email marketing.

Ask yourself these questions:

- What do your prospects/customers want?
- What frustrates your prospects/customers most?
- Who else is selling something similar to you?
- Why should your prospects/customers believe you?
- Why should prospects/customers respond to you instead of
someone else?
- What kind of appeals will your target market respond to?


=> Step #2 - A GREAT SUBJECT IS YOUR OBJECT

Before an email can generate results, recipients need to
open it. But what can you do to spark their interest and
get their interest "motor" revved up?

Your SUBJECT LINE is the key.

There are four types of email formulas you can use as a
guide in crafting your email. Each has a different
PSYCHOLOGICAL APPEAL that works like magic on consumers.
Here are some examples:

Sit down and write every conceivable benefit your product

Here`s a rule of thumb for benefits: ask yourself "What can
my product or service do for my customer?" Then begin to
write your letter telling your reader WHAT`S IN IT FOR THEM.
Tell them how much better life will be for them after they
buy from you. Tell them how much better they`ll feel. Tell
them how their peers will respect them more.


=> Step #4 - AN EMOTIONAL APPEAL

When promoting anything to anybody, you must remember that
buying decisions are based upon emotion and later backed up
by logic. Before you write a single word, determine what
emotional hot buttons you need to push to "jumpstart" your
prospect.

Selling health supplements? Go for the "fear of illness"
button with "A Natural Way to Save Your Eyesight." Selling
political bumper stickers? Hit the "anger" button with:
"Let the President Know What You Think of His Policies."
Other buttons include: curiosity, greed, ego, vanity, hope,
and/or fear of scarcity or security.


=> Step #5 - A NAME YOU CAN TRUST

To convince people to buy your product or service, you must
make them believe that your offer is credible and that you
(or your product) will deliver as promised.

How do you do that? Here are three ways you can build
credibility with the readers of your sales letter:

- Include endorsement letters from authority figures in your
industry.
- Make your offer and promises sincere and believable.

believe it or not, although most people will NOT ask for a
refund, they`ll trust your offer knowing that you stand
behind it.

You can offer a 24-hour, 30-day, 60-day, 90-day, or even a
full-year. And here`s an interesting fact: The longer the
time period, the fewer returns you`ll have! It`s human
nature to procrastinate, so the more time someone thinks
they have to get a refund, the more they`ll put it off or
forget about the refund altogether.


=> Step #7 - DON`T FORGET TO ASK

It happens all the time. Someone makes a fantastic sales
presentation, and then doesn`t close the deal because he/she
didn`t clearly ask for the order or made the process
confusing rather than simple.

- From the Research Department: Statistics show that you
need to ask for the order at least three times to close
substantial sales. (Some studies put the number at 7!)

If you can, offer several ways for your prospects to
order -- consumers love choice. It tells them, "You`re
talking directly to me and meeting my unique needs." If you
only offer one way to order, make it crystal clear how AND
how easy it is. Describe it in detail and ask for the
order. Then ask again.


=> Step #8 - THE EYES HAVE IT

It`s a well-known fact: Large blocks of copy are
intimidating and will often send people running for the
hills or at least the Delete button.

The solution? Break up paragraphs into two to four
sentences. Use several subheadings throughout the email
letter. And use asterisks, dashes, and ellipses (...) to
give your copy more rhythm. Bullet points are excellent
eye-catchers - use them whenever appropriate.

It`s an old, old saying, but it`s true: you only have one
chance to make a good first impression. And in email, the
first impression is always visual -- a consumer LOOKS/SEES
before he/she READS.

Imagine walking by a grotesquely garish storefront with all
kinds of things hanging off the front porch, every floor
painted a different color, and odd music playing through
loudspeakers. Would you want to walk in the front door? No
way! You`d assume that the owner is a kook, at best, or a
deranged axe murderer, at worst.

Did you ever have an ugly looking email land in your
mailbox? You know what I`m talking about: an orange
background and yellow borders, multi-colored text in all
sizes from gigantic to microscopic, a message that looks like
it was created by a crazed six-year-old? If you did, I bet
you didn`t feel the urge to read it. You probably just
wanted to delete it as quickly as possible.

=> PUT OUT THE WELCOME MAT
You want your email message to be friendly and inviting, not
bizarre and scary. The suggestions below -- and they`re
just suggestions, not hard and fast rules -- will go a long
way towards making recipients` eyes say "come on in!" to
your message.

=> DO`s and DON`Ts FOR ATTRACTIVE EMAILS

-DON`T use COLOR fonts in your message. (Leave that to
junior high girls who want to write about Britney and
Justin)

-DO use BLACK TEXT ON A WHITE BACKGROUND. (When you`re
"speaking" in black-and-white, people will give their full
attention to your message without being distracted by your
color scheme.)

-DON`T use UNCOMMON FONTS. (If someone`s system doesn`t
recognize the font you`ve selected, they could see gibberish
instead of your brilliant message).

-DO use the email marketers` FAVORITE FONTS: Arial, Times
New Roman, and Courier New

And please.

-DON`T use flashing buttons or banners in your email! (Your
prospects have undoubtedly gotten their fill of "bells and
whistles" when they`ve surfed the Internet. They don`t need
more from you.)

=> GET HYPER" WITH EMAIL HYPERLINKS

An "email hyperlink" is just techno-talk for a link in your
email to a website, or email address. Sounds simple enough,
and it is -- unless you try to contact a prospect on AOL who
may not be able to receive "clickable" links.

Don`t worry. There`s a "fix" for this: simply type mailto:
in front of your email address (no space in between, and
include the : )

=> ALWAYS USE SIGNATURE TAGS

Today, it`s common practice on the Internet to tell people
about your product or service with a SIGNATURE TAG, which is
3-6 lines of text (usually) that is automatically added to
every message you send.

If you`d like to add a tag to your messages, simply open
your email program. Find the SIGNATURES TAB (located in the
TOOLS/OPTIONS menu in Outlook Express). Follow the (simple)
instructions for creating a sig file. Easy as pie...and the
results will amaze you.

Essential Rules for Effective Email Marketing

If you want an email campaign to succeed, you don`t want to
offend anyone when sending your messages. Turn off a
consumer with your email and you can be sure they`ll
tune out your message. Don`t let this happen to you!

A message that earns respect makes sales. That`s why our
first topic for discussion is email etiquette. (Later in the
course, we`ll talk more about how to write an email sales
letter.)

Train yourself to always -- and I mean ALWAYS -- stick to
the rules below when crafting your email message.

=> RULE #1 - ALWAYS WRAP YOUR LINES AT 65
CHARACTERS OR LESS

Whenever you write an email, always format the lines so that
they`re 65 characters, or less, across. To do this, you may
need to do a "hard return" by hitting "Enter" at the end of
the line.

Wondering why to limit your lines to just 65 characters?
(Good question! It shows you`re thinking.) There are two
reasons that "less is more":

-- The first thing to remember is that looking at a computer
screen for a long time causes EYE FATIGUE for many readers.
The shorter span of characters across the screen makes
reading easier and more appealing to the recipient of your
email message.

-- The other reason to go short instead of long is this:
some email clients AUTOMATICALLY ENFORCE LINE-WRAPPING
at 60-65 characters on received messages. If your email
is wrapped at 70, the content will arrive all "chopped up."
This makes it unattractive...and worse -- unappealing.

-- Tip within a Rule #1: Email clients such as Outlook
Express allow you to SET THE LINE-WRAP to any
character-width you choose. That means you won`t have to
hit Enter each time after typing 65 characters. Makes life
easier!

-- Tip within a Rule #2 - You can type 65 asterisks or
dashes in a Notepad file to create a template. Then paste
your email below it to see if any lines extend too far to
the right.


=> RULE # 2 - BE CAREFUL USING ALL CAPS

How many times have you changed the TV channel to avoid
listening to a screaming car salesperson? No one likes a
screaming salesperson...and no one likes a "screaming" email
message, either. Odds are, when someone has over-amped the
volume of their message by using too many capital letters
(not to mention too many exclamation points and other
punctuation) - you`re going to be turned off.

On the Internet, email messages written in all caps are
considered yelling. It`s okay to write some sentences and
some words in all caps, but don`t go overboard. (As you can
see in this message, I`ve tried to use capital letters to
help break up sections of the content from time to time)

-- Tip within a Rule: Consumers buy from a source they
trust. Emails in all caps are perceived as "shady" or
uneducated, and have an appearance that damages the
credibility of an offer.


=> RULE #3 - WATCH YOUR Ps & Qs (Spelling and Grammar)

Would you be influenced by an email selling you something
that had noticeable spelling and grammar mistakes? Sure you
would...and the influence would be negative, not positive!
When a consumer reads a sales message that`s filled with
errors, they think to themselves, "Good grief, this person
doesn`t even take the time to get his emails right. His
product is probably the same quality as his emails."

When you`re in business, YOUR IMAGE IS YOUR REPUTATION
and your reputation is the reason people buy from you or the
guy down the block. It`s essential that you create an image
of INTEGRITY, CREDIBILITY, and HONESTY in the mind
of your prospects. Sending emails filled with errors doesn`t
hurt your professional image...it destroys it. (Ouch!)

That's a lot of money!

For most, however, the dream becomes a nightmare. According to the Wall Street Journal® there were 572,900 small business births in 2004 and 554,800 deaths, a business mortality rate of 97%.

1. What are my top 4-6 personal and professional priorities? You don't get more than six! Most business leaders I work with land on 1-2 personal priorities and 3-4 professional priorities.

2. What are the 1-2 most important steps of action I can take to act on these priorities each and every week? These are not the only things you do during the week, but they are the most important things THAT GET DONE NO MATTER WHAT.

3. How can I put these 10-12 top priority steps of action in my calendar so that they are protected and uninterrupted? If you had an important doctor's appointment for Tuesday at 3:00 PM, how would you make sure you got there? Treat these 10-12 steps of action–that's just 2-3 items a day–like a doctor's appointment.

4. What things am I doing during the week that are NOT my top priorities and should NOT be done? Drucker again observes, "I have yet to see an executive, regardless of rank or station who could not consign a quarter of the demands on his time to the wastepaper basket without anybody's noticing their disappearance."

A POWERFUL SUCCESS STORY AT IBM

Louis V. Gerstner was appointed CEO of IBM on April 1, 1993.

IBM stock had plunged to $12.73 a share, but when Gerstner left the company eight years later, Big Blue's was trading at $120.96. It was the greatest turnaround in business history. Gerstner tells his story in the brilliant book, Who Says Elephants Can't Dance? Central to Gernster's success was an epiphany he had a year into the job. Directory owners know how frequent marketing of their directories is extremely important for both bringing targeted traffic and boosting sales. But most directory owners are not using all the possible resources for creating more traffic. I have compiled the top 20 tips to help make your directory better known to your prospective customers.

How to use eBay to promote a "regular" Internet business

A lot of you wrote in with questions about eBay after the article I wrote in last week's newsletter (titled "eBay or a 'regular' business -- which is better?")

For example, a reader named Pearl asked, "How do you introduce your products to whole new audiences on eBay? Do you actually talk about your other site?"

That's a great question, Pearl. Few people realize what an incredibly useful tool eBay can be for promoting a "regular" Internet business.

However, there is a right way to use eBay for promoting an off-eBay website -- and there is a wrong way.

The right way can drive huge waves of qualified visitors to your business... but the wrong way can get you banned from ever doing business on eBay again!

So before I tell you about what you can do, I think it's important you understand what eBay's stringent regulations say you can't do. That way, you can make sure you never get on eBay's bad side, and can continue to tap into its enormous pool of 244,000,000 registered users!

eBay DON'Ts:

* DON'T include any links to your off-eBay website in your auction listings

* DON'T include any links to your website in your eBay store or custom pages

* DON'T include an opt-in offer in your auction listings

* DON'T include an opt-in offer in your eBay store

* DON'T automatically add your customers or visitors to your auctions to your opt-in list

... In short, don't overtly try to send people off eBay or collect their information for marketing purposes on your auction listings, your eBay store, or any of your custom pages without their expressed consent.

"But wait a minute," you're probably thinking, "then how on earth can I use eBay to drive new visitors to my website?

Well, there is one place you can include a link to your off-eBay website. AND you can put an opt-in form there to collect people's email addresses, so you can build a relationship with them and promote your products to them in the future.

What is this place? It's your "About Me" page. And it's the most important weapon in your eBay marketing arsenal!

Here's how you use it...

eBay DOs:

* DO include a link to your off-eBay website on your "About Me" page, and encourage visitors to see what other products you have to offer

* DO include an opt-in form on your "About Me" page, with a compelling offer -- an interesting newsletter or valuable free report -- that encourages people to sign up

* DO use every possible opportunity in your auction listings and your eBay Store to encourage people to check out your "About Me" page

o Tell them to go to your "About Me" page to learn more about important information such as your shipping policies

o Tell them to read your FAQs on your "About Me" page

o Tell them to learn more about the products you sell on your "About Me" page

o When people buy something from you, send them ONE follow-up email to thank them for their purchase and invite them to sign up for your newsletter or free report, so you can get them on your opt-in list.

o BUT: They HAVE to opt in for you to be able to mail to them! (If you just start mailing them out of the blue and they complain to eBay, you WILL get kicked off the auction site for good.)

And that's basically it! You create as many reasons as possible for people to visit your "About Me" page, and then you give them a compelling reason to...

1. Sign up for your newsletter, and
2. Check out your off-eBay store to see what you offer there

If you do it right, you'll discover that eBay is an excellent customer acquisition tool for your business.

In fact, you might find it more effective NOT to sell your main product on eBay, but to sell related products for minimal profit, simply to grow your customer base so you can back-end sell your main products to them in the future.

Here's an example of what I mean... Say you sell an eBook teaching people how to cure their tennis elbow. eBooks are great products in the off-eBay world because you get to keep 100% of the profits from each sale.

But on eBay, eBooks tend to sell for relatively cheap. So don't sell your eBook there, where you'll take a loss in profits!

Instead, sell tennis-related dropshipping products on eBay for very little profit. You won't make a huge amount of money on the front end... but you WILL be able to grow a huge customer base of people who are obviously interested in tennis.

Then, once you've persuaded them to sign up for your opt-in list, you can promote your "tennis elbow" eBook to them down the road -- as well as scores of other tennis-related products.

And THAT's when the money will really start pouring in.

Finally, I'd just like to point out that eBay does regularly change their policies, so it's important you regularly check to make sure you're following eBay's official seller regulations, so you can stay on their good side.

Editorial: Four "must-know" tips to help you choose the right SEO firm

Derek One of my readers, Richard, recently wrote to ask me for some advice on choosing a company to take over his search engine optimization efforts.

Now, search engine optimization is something you can easily do yourself -- and when you're first starting out and don't have a lot of extra money to spend on your business, I strongly recommend you do oversee your own search marketing campaigns.

Not only will you save a ton of money -- knowing what keywords to use when promoting your business (as well as how and where to use them) is an essential skill for any serious online marketer to have.

But as your business and profits grow, you should be on the lookout for ways to free up your time by outsourcing time-consuming tasks.

(Remember... You've got to work ON your business -- not in your business! It's absolutely key to growing your success.)

And -- honestly -- when it comes to time-consuming tasks, search engine marketing is close to the top of the list. Taking full advantage of the massive traffic potential of the search engines is no overnight job. It can suck up many hours a week.

So as soon as you can afford to do so, you should seriously consider outsourcing your search engine marketing to a dedicated SEO company.

However, choosing that company can be difficult! There are lots of businesses out there that capitalize on people's ignorance about SEO and make all sorts of outrageous promises they can never fulfill.

So in order to help you make this important decision -- and to help you steer clear of all the scammers out there -- here are four essential tips you need to know in order to choose an expert SEO company that really will drive swarms of targeted traffic to your site!

Tip #1: Don't believe companies that "guarantee a #1 ranking"

There is no SEO company in the world that can guarantee a #1 ranking for high-traffic keywords in Google or Yahoo. If you come across a company that advertises such a guarantee, approach them with caution. They're promising the impossible.

I regularly have students ask me about companies that "guarantee a #1 ranking with the major search engines." But when I look at the fine print, it always includes conditions that make the guarantee worthless.

(For example: the company will get you a #1 ranking for a search term that gets absolutely NO traffic!)

The only guarantee I would consider legitimate is one that states, "We get you [enter specific results here] in [enter specific time frame here] or you get [enter percentage here] of your money back."

Try make sure those specific results have to do with the amount of qualified traffic you get -- not your listing's position in the search results.

Remember, it's not your ranking that's ultimately most important -- it's the quantity and quality of traffic your SEO efforts deliver.

After all, who cares about a top ranking that doesn't send you tons of visitors who actually want to buy your product?

Which brings me to my next point...

Tips #2: Look for companies that define SEO success as sales -- not just random traffic.

A successfully optimized site speaks to human visitors as well as search engine spiders. Don't sacrifice the former for the latter!

Yes, you have to insert your top-performing keywords in strategic locations all over your site, including your copy. But you have to balance that with the need for your site to appeal to your visitors and convert them into buying customers.

A good SEO company understands that. A bad SEO company will argue that more traffic is all you need.

But what use is traffic that costs you money -- but doesn't pay the bills?

So when you are interviewing potential SEO companies, make sure their optimization practices really focus on driving quality traffic to your site -- and converting those visitors into sales.

Designing a web page that gets a high ranking in Google really isn't all that difficult. Designing a web page that gets top ranking and has a good conversion rate is an art form -- and it's the reason why good SEO firms get paid well.

Tips #3: Are they focused on one "miracle strategy"?

Whenever I interview an SEO firm, I always make sure they have a well-rounded campaign strategy. Many SEO firms focus on a "miracle strategy" and then put all of their efforts into that one strategy.

But if you want to make sure you keep your high ranking -- and don't get booted out of the search engine results the minute Google updates its algorithm -- you can't put all your eggs in one bucket.

Your SEO campaign needs to contain a mix of strategies (such as on-site optimization, article sharing, and viral link-building) in order to deliver consistent results for years to come.

It's the only way to guarantee that your hard-won ranking doesn't disappear overnight.

Tip #4: Does their insanely low price make you say, "Wow, that's too good to be true!" Well, guess what -- it is.

A good SEO firm that delivers real results isn't cheap. Depending on the size of the job, you can expect to pay at least $1000 just to kick off your campaign -- and then a monthly fee of $150 or more to continue the marketing and maintenance of your campaign.

So if you come across a company offering "complete search engine optimization and submission for only $99!" -- run!

When it comes to SEO, the phrase "You get what you pay for" couldn't be more true.

And remember, before you start searching for a company to help you with your SEO, make sure you do your homework and are familiar with what it takes to get your site ranked well. A little education can go a long way in helping to make sure your SEO company provides your with the services you need to win the search engine game.

Why ExitExplosion.com Is The Best Free Traffic System
